The set

Almost every job in a house comes down to two actions: making a hole, and driving a fastener. A drill does the first well and the second badly, which is why the screws you sink with one end up chewed, over-driven or snapped. This set gives each action its own tool and puts both on the same 18V battery.

The drill/driver is the one you reach for first. 400 in-lbs of torque, a 1/2 in. chuck, and 20 clutch settings — the collar you turn to tell it how hard to push before it lets go, which is what stops a screw head being ruined or a cabinet panel being split. Its head is only 6.3 inches long, so it works overhead and inside a carcass without your wrist paying for it. The impact driver is the one that surprises people.

It hammers rotationally as it turns, so it puts 1800 in-lbs into a lag bolt without twisting itself out of your hand the way a drill does. The head is 4.9 in. long — short enough to fit between studs and inside a cabinet where a drill simply will not go — and the trigger is variable, so the same tool that drives a 6 inch bolt will also start a small screw without launching it. Both motors are brushless: no carbon brushes to wear down, less heat, more of the battery going into the work.

Two 18V 2.0 Ah lithium-ion batteries come with it, so one is charging while the other is on the tool, along with the charger, two belt clips and a bag to keep it in. The whole kit weighs 4.26 kg.

What each tool is actually for

  • Two tools on one 18V battery: a compact drill/driver for holes, a brushless impact driver for fasteners
  • 1800 in-lb of torque from the impact driver — enough for lag bolts, without twisting out of your hand
  • 400 in-lbs and 20 clutch settings on the drill/driver, so a screw stops where you want it to
  • Brushless motors in both tools: no brushes to wear, less heat, more of the charge reaching the work
  • Short heads — 4.9 in. on the impact driver, 6.3 inches on the drill — for studs, carcasses and overhead work
  • Two 18V 2.0 Ah lithium-ion batteries, so one charges while the other works
  • Charger, two belt clips and a carrying bag included; the whole kit weighs 4.26 kg

Two tools, because they are two different jobs

A drill bores. An impact driver fastens. Using one for both is why screws get chewed and wrists get tired. Here the drill/driver takes the holes with a 1/2 in. chuck and 400 in-lbs, and the impact driver takes the fasteners with 1800 in-lb — and both run off the same 18V battery, so there is one charger and one set of cells to keep track of.

The clutch is the part people underrate

Twenty settings on the collar of the drill/driver. You are telling the tool how much resistance to accept before it disengages, which is the difference between a screw sitting flush in a cabinet door and a screw that has pulled through it. Set it low for softwood and hinges, high for the jobs where you want it to keep pushing.

Short heads get into real spaces

The impact driver's head is 4.9 in. long and the drill's is 6.3 inches. Those are the numbers that decide whether a tool fits between two studs, inside a kitchen carcass, or above your head in a loft. Bulkier tools with the same torque figures simply do not reach, and you end up finishing the job with a screwdriver.

Brushless, and two batteries

Brushless motors have no carbon brushes to wear away, run cooler and put more of the battery's charge into the work rather than into heat. Two 18V 2.0 Ah lithium-ion packs come in the box, which in practice means you are never waiting on a charger mid-job — one is on the tool while the other fills. Belt clips for both tools and a bag to carry the lot.

  • The impact driver is the reason to buy this

I had a drill already and thought the second tool was padding. It is not. Sinking 100mm screws into joists used to be a two-handed fight and now it is a squeeze of the trigger. The clutch on the drill is genuinely useful for hinges too — I have stopped stripping the little brass screws on cabinet doors.

  • Light enough to work above your head

Fitted an entire kitchen's worth of wall units with this. Being able to get the drill inside the carcass mattered more than I expected, and swapping to the second battery meant no stopping. It is not the most powerful set you can buy but it is the one I could still hold up at the end of the afternoon.

  • Bag is basic, tools are not

Two months of daily-ish use and both are holding up well. Brushless makes a noticeable difference to how warm the drill gets on a long run of holes. The soft bag is the weak link — it does the job but I will move to a case eventually. Belt clips on both tools were a small thing I now would not go without.

  • Good tools, but 2.0 Ah is the compromise

No complaints about the tools themselves — the impact driver especially punches above its size. But the batteries are 2.0 Ah, which is the small end. For a day of decking I ran both flat and had to wait. If you are doing sustained heavy work, budget for a bigger pack; for household jobs the two that come with it are fine.

Before you buy

What is the difference between the drill and the impact driver?

The drill/driver bores holes and drives screws with a clutch that stops at a set resistance — 400 in-lbs, 20 settings, 1/2 in. chuck. The impact driver only fastens, but it adds rotational hammering to reach 1800 in-lb, which is what long screws and lag bolts need. Most jobs use both.

What comes in the box?

The drill/driver, the impact driver, two 18V 2.0 Ah lithium-ion batteries, an 18V charger, two belt clips and a carrying bag. Nothing else is needed to start.

Will it fit in tight spaces?

That is what the head lengths are for. The impact driver measures 4.9 in. from chuck to back and the drill 6.3 inches, which is short enough to work between studs, inside kitchen carcasses and overhead.

How long do the batteries last?

They are 2.0 Ah packs, which suits household and fit-out work rather than a full day of sustained heavy driving. Two come in the box so one charges while the other is in use.

What does brushless actually mean?

There are no carbon brushes to wear down against the motor. In use it means less heat, less maintenance, and more of the battery's charge going into turning the chuck instead of being lost.

How heavy is the set?

4.26 kg for the kit as it ships — both tools, both batteries, the charger and the bag together.
